The numbers are depressing and frightening at the same time, although not always taken seriously! Atherosclerosis IS the leading cause of heart attack, stroke, vascular dementia, and peripheral artery disease, and the No. 1 killer stalking people over 45 - in their most productive period of life.
In the United States alone, it causes more than 870,000 deaths each year, which is about 2,400 people dying every day -- more than all forms of cancer combined; an average of one death every 39 seconds.
Over 80 million - one in three - Americans live with some form of cardiovascular disease or have a serious risk factor that increases the likelihood of developing heart disease. Nearly 1 million American people are disabled each year from strokes.
According to a Canadian study published in a leading medical journal, cardiovascular disease is also one of the leading causes of death in Canada, claiming more than 33,600 lives per year. Over 1.4 million Canadians have heart disease. From 2003 to 2011, fewer than 1 in 10 adults and 1 in 5 youth were in ideal cardiovascular health, which means that over 90% of Canadians are at some risk for heart attack or stroke (CMAJ Feb. 18, 2014).
The list of countries goes on and on. In England and Wales, for example, each year an estimated 124,000 deaths are caused by cardiovascular disease.
